JEH STALLIONS HAVE GOOD SHOWING IN MINNESOTA DERBY, FUTURITY
SOUTHERN CARTEL's offspring ran first and third in the $23,550 Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby and FEATURE MR JESS sired the place horse in the $23,400 Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity. They were the opening events of the 2009 Minnesota Festival of Champions, an event created in 1992 to feature the best in Minnesota bred horses. Traffic Cartel Easy Winner in Minnesota Derby Traffic Cartel, owned by Robert and Julie Petersen of Cokato, MN, won the Derby with Stormy Smith aboard. The 3-year-old SOUTHERN CARTEL gelding trained by Ed Ross Hardy completed the 400 Yards in 20.049 seconds.
Traffic Cartel won a $5,000 claiming race last month earned $11,775 for the victory. “We try to stay competitive and put them where they can win.” Hardy said. Quattro races for TAC Partners and was saddled by Amber Blair. Jason Olmstead got the riding assignment to earn $4,710. Rodney Von Ohlen's Call Me Mr Nibs, is also a gelded son of SOUTHERN CARTEL saddled by Hardy. Tad Leggett was in the irons picking up $3,533. Completing the field were Cs Dee Light, Pinks, The Inclindenator, Sr Dr Corona and Snowsirprize. Cynthia Besser's Home-bred Just Misses in Futurity Cynthia Besser's home-bred FEATURE MR JESS colt, Mr Hempens Feature, finished a head off Oak Tree Boulevard in the Minnesota Futurity. Saddled by Ed Hardy, the sorrel colt picked up $4,680 under a ride from jockey Stormy Smith. Oak Tree Boulevard went favored and returned $2.80, $2.40 and $2.10. Mr Hempens Feature paid $13.80 and $6.00. Okeys Irish Brew ran third and paid $3.80. Completing the futurity field were Six It Up, Rockn On Ready CS Spotlight, Luckily Charming and Mor Mors Gem.
