MR LU BUBBA CLIMBS FROM CLAIM TO GRADE 3 WINNER IN CANTERBURY DERBY

SHAKOPEE, MN—JUNE 29, 2008—Mr Lu Bubba, claimed on April 3 for $10,000, held on to win by a nose in the Grade 3 $41,000 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby on Sunday afternoon at Canterbury Park.

Racing for Newton and Grisham Wilmes, the FEATURE MR JESS gelding broke alertly getting off to a quick start before holding off the fast closing Classy Dashin in :19.863 seconds over the 400 yards. The second place horse was 2-3/4 lengths ahead of the field.

Saddled by Edward Ross Hardy and ridden by Tad Leggett, Mr Lu Bubba earned $20,500 pushing his career record to 5-2-2 in 13 starts and earnings of $54,311.

The sorrel gelding was claimed from Stacy Charette Hill and Leon Red at Remington Park. Following a ninth place effort in his first start at Remington Park on March 15 as a 3-year-old, Hill and Red dropped the gelding in for the $10,000 tag on April 3. He responded with a one length win while earning a career high speed index of 101.

Classy Dashing, starting from the outside post, picked up $8,200 for his effort. Racing for Leo Butell and trained by Amber Blair, the gelding was the second fastest qualifier in the trials, behind Mr Lu Bubba. Jason Olmstead was in the irons.

Im Gone For A Corona, owned by Nancy McCoy and trained by Charley Hunt picked up the third place money. The Corona Carte filly was a finalist in the Kansas Futurity (G2) as a 2-year-old.

Completing the field were Feintastic, Emirates, Okey Dokey Irish, Wave Rider, Lord Gardendale, Wheely Quick and Cs Limelight.
